Aeroplio Around the World

Our world is moving forward, and so is culture; technology is evolving at a rapid pace and sweeping everything along in its path. Theatre could be no exception.

Aeroplio, and by extension TOPOS ALLOu, does not keep its eyes closed to this constant ‘becoming’.

Our involvement and participation in programmes and projects now spans quite a number of years. To carry out programmes, we have worked with many bodies and organisations of international standing, educational institutions and internationally renowned European universities.

From 1996 to the present day, AEROPLIO Theatre and the CENTRE OF HIGHER EDUCATION IN THEATRE STUDIES (our research arm – an independent non-profit organisation) have worked together on and delivered fifteen projects. Most of them were based on our own ideas, and responsibility for carrying them out lay with AEROPLIO and the Centre of Higher Education in Theatre Studies, which is the educational and research department and brings together inspired people who work and express themselves through it.

From the NEW LIFE MAPS programme (a pioneering programme developed inside prisons for minors and adolescents) to the Ruth Berlau project (an educational tool for teaching History in secondary education), and from there to VR Theatre and, of course, Scout (a programme for theatre education in Europe), we have enriched our knowledge, worked with very large educational and artistic organisations, and broadened our know-how and our horizons. Two Culture programmes of the EU Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) were devoted, one to folk tales (‘Thalassa of Myths’ 2008–2010) and the other to ancient tragedy (‘Ancient Pathos’ 2011–2013).

The festivals we have taken part in have made us more widely known across Europe and have given us the chance to learn about and get to know the work of other theatres that use new techniques and methods and take theatre one step further. Our most recent trips were to the EUROKIDS FESTIVAL in Washington, where we performed at the KENNEDY CENTER; to Australia in May 2012, where we performed at Greek community schools in Melbourne and Sydney; and to Verona, for performances with the Ancient Pathos programme.

Two more projects are currently under way. 1.

FAIDRA Project,

on the phenomenon of migration from the Second World War onwards (CREATIVE EUROPE), and 2.

-a method showing how a teacher can teach their lessons through theatre techniques (ERASMUS+).
