Performances for Schools & Groups

A school trip to the theatre should, first of all, be something the children look forward to. A chance to laugh, to be surprised, to sing, to put their hands up, to shout an answer to the actor and, back at school, to have something to talk about.

That is the thinking behind AEROPLIO’s performances.

For years we have been making theatre especially for children, knowing that young audiences are perhaps the most demanding audiences of all. A child doesn’t clap out of politeness. If they’re bored, they’ll show it. If they’re thrilled, they’ll show that too. That’s why our performances have a fast pace, humour, music, songs, movement, colourful sets and costumes, puppets, video and modern theatrical techniques. Above all, though, they have direct contact with the children.

Our young audience members don’t just sit facing the stage, watching a story unfold without them. The actors talk to them, ask for their help, put dilemmas to them, listen to their answers, sing with them and often make them part of the action itself. Taking part isn’t a little game at the end of the performance. It is part of the theatre experience.

Who is standing in front of the children matters a great deal too. AEROPLIO’s actors and collaborators have experience in education and know how to communicate with different age groups. They don’t treat a school performance as an ‘easy morning show’. They stay close to the children, watch how they react and adjust the pace of their communication to the audience in front of them each time.

The themes of our plays start from the world that interests children and concerns them. Friendship, the environment and climate change, getting to know painting and Art History, folk tradition, historical memory, diversity and bullying, knowing what to do in an earthquake: any of these can become the starting point for a theatrical adventure.

But we don’t want to turn theatre into a textbook with spotlights.

The educational side comes through the story, the jokes, the images and the play. A child can learn what tectonic plates are because a peculiar Sismolados explains them with biscuits and whipped cream. They can meet Dalí and Leonardo da Vinci by following a girl who has escaped from a painting. They can talk about exclusion by watching a grey nightingale that the other birds don’t want in their company. That is how we want theatre to work for schools: knowledge born out of an experience the child remembers.

Organised school performances take place at our theatre, and several of AEROPLIO’s productions can also travel to your school. For each age group, we can help you choose the performance that best suits the children and your class’s educational goals.
